PTHS 209 to Work Toward Further Deficit Reduction

Forest Park, IL...When it comes to fiscal management and accountability, Proviso Township High Schools remains in the highest financial category. But with revenues declining, the district must now work to reduce its annual budget.

“We have to get revenue and expenses into balance for 2012,” said PTHS 209 Board Member and Finance Committee Chair Kevin McDermott. “The board has a written policy requiring a balanced budget. Our own policy creates the need to balance funds.”

For two consecutive years, Proviso Township High Schools has entered the fiscal year with a balanced budget. This year due to declines in state revenue, federal revenue, and property tax collections, District 209 must reduce its FY12 budget by at least $1.2 million. On Monday, August 8th at the regularly scheduled Board of Education Meeting, the board approved a tentative budget for FY12 with a $1.2 million deficit.  The board emphasized that this is a tentative budget. Board President Chris Welch, fellow board members, the Financial Oversight panel, and the administration have vowed to work together to find more areas for cost savings.

“You all have done a nice job [of balancing funds and staying within budget],” said the Financial Oversight Panel Administrator, Tim Cole. “But the situation around you has changed. It is not what we have been doing. It’s looking forward at all of the changes in revenue.”

District 209 will consider an adjustment in transportation costs, attorney fees, the PAEC budget, and stipends paid for clubs and activity sponsors. All activity sponsor stipends have been placed on hold until the Sept. 8th FOP meeting pending their approval. In the meantime, the tentative budget for FY12 will remain on public display for inspection in the business offices of Proviso East, Proviso West, and Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy for a period of 30 days. The budget will also be on display at all village libraries within District 209’s attendance areas.  PTHS 209 officials are continuing to work toward a balanced budget before final approval.

A Public Hearing will be held on Monday, September 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the Social Room of Proviso East High School. All questions regarding the PTHS 209 Tentative Budget should be submitted to the Superintendent, Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart prior to the hearing date by calling (708-338-5910) or emailing ncollins-hart@pths209.org.
