Proviso Township High Schools' Students See Improved Test Scores: PMSA Makes Safe Harbor

Forest Park, IL...Proviso Township High Schools District 209 ACT scores have reached their highest levels in five years. The District also made strong improvements in this year’s Prairie State Achievement Exam, with Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy reaching Safe Harbor for all subgroups.

“This year’s test scores show that we are making progress in many areas,” said PTHS 209 Superintendent Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart. “While we know that there is still more work to be done, we must thank our teachers for the strong efforts they continue to put forth. They have truly come together to help push our schools above the line. We are looking into the testing data. We are making continuous progress, and though we still need to strengthen in all areas, student achievement is on the rise.”

Proviso East High School showed improvement in performance for economically disadvantaged students. Proviso West High School showed improvements in all areas, except students with disabilities. Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy also showed improvements in all areas. The school reached Safe Harbor among all sub-groups for the 2010-2011 school year. Those teachers will be awarded a bonus per their teachers’ union contract for helping students and the school district raise the bar.

The percentage of all students at the Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy that met or exceeded the performance target in reading rose from 65% in 2010 to 72.8% in 2011. The percentage of all students at the Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy that met or exceeded the performance target in mathematics rose from 69.3% in 2010 to 72.8% in 2011.

The percentage of all students at Proviso West that met or exceeded the performance target in reading rose from 23.2% in 2010 to 26.1% in 2011. The percentage of all students at Proviso West that met or exceeded the performance target in mathematics rose from 16.9% in 2010 to 20.7% in 2011.

Proviso East High School's test scores increased in only one area. Officials say they will analyze the Proviso East test score data to better understand the shift and make proper decisions on how to get the school on track.

The percentage of all students at Proviso East that met or exceeded the performance target in reading fell from 15.4% in 2010 to 12.6% in 2011. The percentage of all students at Proviso East that met or exceeded the performance target in mathematics fell from 17.6% in 2010 to 12.9% in 2011.

Overall, district wide PTHS 209 showed strong improvements. With a new school year underway, new leadership, and stronger programming in place, student achievement is expected to continue to rise in all areas.  ACT scores also increased across Proviso high schools putting District 209 only three points away from the state average composite.

“We are extremely proud of the work that our faculty and staff have done to help our students improve,” said PTHS 209 Board President Chris Welch. “We have put some great things in place over the past three years. We expected to see growth in many areas, and we are glad that in many ways our students and our faculty met those expectations. Each year the state raises the bar. Each year we are raising the bar, and we will look for even greater improvements and greater efforts that will help our students perform at higher levels.”
